About our Firm
Our History
Spengler Nathanson has a rich and distinguished history that began on February 1, 1947, when the law firm of Spengler, Nathanson, Hebenstreit, and Heyman officially opened its doors. Those four young attorneys, Otto Spengler, Joe Nathanson, Bert Hebenstreit, and Joe Heyman had a dream for what their firm would accomplish and who it would help, and they set out to make it happen.
Each partner had his own set of skills and areas of expertise that created the most well-rounded practice in the Toledo area. And with their community involvement in organizations like the YMCA, the Humane Society, the Child Welfare Board, and the Toledo Kiwanis Club, their reputation was already ingrained into the heart of Toledo.
While our firm initially focused on small business and public law, we were ever mindful of the changing needs of the community and those we committed to serving. With this in mind, the firm grew from the 4 attorneys who started it all, to more than 25 attorneys on board with us today.
Our Firm Today
With more than 70 years of experience and deep roots in the community guiding us along, Spengler Nathanson remains the trusted source of legal counsel for small family-owned businesses to large corporations in a variety of industries.
Our prominent presence as a trial practice in all Ohio state and federal courts, and administrative agencies, as well as our unblemished reputation as civil litigators, means we’ve earned the right to work on far-reaching cases with long-lasting impact.
Seven of our attorneys have served as President of the Toledo Bar Association because we believe in serving our profession, and our industry, well. Spengler Nathanson attorney Bill Meyer is currently serving as Toledo Bar Association President, and firm partner Sarah Skow is in line to become the firm’s eighth such President. Former partner Jim Jeffery served as the President of the Ohio State Bar Association. Former partner and current of counsel attorney, Tim Greenwood, served as State Representative and State Senator in the Ohio General Assembly. Our attorneys have served in leadership roles for the United Way, the Rotary Clubs of Toledo and Perrysburg, The Toledo Bar Foundation, on school boards, and on countless charitable boards such as the Child and Family Abuse Prevention Center, the Arthritis Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs of Toledo, St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital.
We don’t list these names for any other reason than to give you the peace of mind that you need to trust in our expertise, trust in our commitment to bettering our community, and trust in our pledge to continually serve with the highest of professional and ethical standards.
